Components of a ventilation system

05/05/20

Why have these systems become so popular?

Can you imagine a summer in which we have to be in a closed space and we do not have any type of ventilation system? Although previously they were not given much importance and the most frequent was to install only an exhaust fan in buildings and premises, today these devices have become one of our greatest allies in managing to ventilate a closed space. They allow to refresh both small spaces and large surfaces to make us feel cooler and more comfortable.

Its use is widespread in many homes and businesses across the country. Let′s say that they have become an indispensable element in the daily life of many, especially in times of the most extreme temperatures. However, if we asked you a series of questions about what are the components of a ventilation system, would you know how to say them all? Surely not … and this is where this article comes into play.

What are the main types of ventilation systems?

Before defining which are the main components of a ventilation system, we must take into account that there are different types of systems and that depending on the model, some components or others will be required. And it falls from the drawer that it is not the same to ventilate a large industrial warehouse as a small apartment in which only one person lives. In general terms, these are the main ventilation systems that you can find:

Single flow ventilation systems

It is the simplest model we can find. It does not control the air intake, only the outlet. One of the main components of this ventilation system is the extractor, by means of which the contaminated air is extracted to be later expelled to the outside through a series of ducts.

Dual flow ventilation systems

In this case we are talking about the most widely used systems today for their high effectiveness. The main difference with respect to the previous ones is that, in addition to extracting the contaminated air and expelling it to the outside, they take care of treating the air that enters the interior.

We must bear in mind that, regardless of the type of ventilation system, there are several factors that affect its operation:

– Indoor climate: conditions such as pressure and ambient temperature inside the room greatly condition people′s perception and feeling of comfort.
– Energy saving level: the characteristics of each type of ventilation system will affect its efficiency and energy consumption.
– Regulation level: it is one of the determining factors that most influences the electricity consumption of the space in which it is installed.

Main components of a ventilation system

Now that we have reviewed the main types of systems that are currently used, it is time to get to know in greater depth what are the different components of a ventilation system and what is the usefulness of each of them.

Filter

When we talk about the filter, we are talking about an essential component within the elements of a ventilation system. Its main function is to prevent dust, dirt, insects and in general any type of particle from entering the premises to be ventilated.

The type of filter to be used will depend on the quality of the air that comes from the outside and also on the quality of the air that we want to get inside.

Electric resistances, heat pumps or hot water batteries

Its function is to prevent very cold air from entering the interior, with the discomfort that this can cause. Through these components, the air is heated until the room reaches the desired temperature.

Cooling coil

This component fulfills the opposite function of electrical resistances: they cool the air that enters from the outside to achieve an adequate temperature. There are different types, but the most widely used are cold water or direct expansion.

Heat recovery

From the point of view of energy consumption, heat recovery is the most efficient method of treating air. Its operation is simple: it transfers heat (or cold, in summer) from the exhaust air to the intake air using only the energy consumption of one of its fans, managing to recover up to 90% of the sensible heat from the exhaust air.

Humidifiers or dehumidifiers

Although they are not present in all systems, it is an element that we can find more and more frequently. They are used both to add and to reduce the percentage of humidity in the environment until more adequate levels are achieved. Another of its additional uses is antibacterial treatment, which is why it can be recommended for hospitals and medical centers.
